Welcome to The Linux Lab!

This forum is for Linux enthusiasts, professionals, and newbies alike. It was created to be a place to learn, share, and talk about Linux. While there are many other communities like this on the Internet, we hope that you add us to your list! With that being said, this post is to lay out some of our ground rules. Please keep in mind that some forums may have specific rules in addition to our global rules. They will be posted within those individual forums.

General Rules

1. This is a friendly and welcoming place. Please treat each other with courtesy and respect. Don't insult or harass anyone.
   
2. Politics and religion are not to be discussed here. You can bring them up in passing, but they are not to be the main topic. Just like underwear and germs, keep them to yourself.
   
3. Please use proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar. If English is not your first language, please try your best. And if you're not sure, ask! And yes, this also includes shorthand. While it's permitted, please don't write whole posts with it - "omg lx iz teh g8st! lolz" is hard to read and annoying. But, "Did you see what Red Hat did? OMG!" is fine.
   
4. Usernames need to be acceptable. Nothing profane or obscene.
   
5. We do allow swearing - we're not children here. However, we ask that you keep it to a fucking minimum!
   
6. You are allowed 1 account. Circumventing bans, warnings, etc. with multiple accounts is not permitted. It's pretty easy to figure out you're using an alternate account. Don't do it. Just play by the rules.
   

Signature Rules

1. Signatures are not billboards. Please keep them reasonable in size.
   
2. Only 255 characters are permitted.
   
3. A maximum of two images are permitted.
   

Warning System

The Linux Lab utilizes a Warning System to issue track rule violations and enforce compliance. As such, we issue point values to infractions. A maximum of 10 points is equal to 100% warning. A 100% warning is a permanent ban. So for those who can't do math, 1 point == 10% so gaining 10 points is 100%. We have the following warning levels:

• 30% (3 Points) - Suspended posting privileges for 1 day
  
• 50% (5 Points) - Suspended posting privileges for 3 days
  
• 90% (9 Points) - Suspended posting privileges for 2 weeks
  
• 100% (10 Points) - Permanently Banned
  

Infractions vary in point values and how long those points stay. For example, signature abuse has 3 levels. Your first offense, you're given 1 point and that point expires after 1 day. So for example, Monday at 3:30 PM you're issued a first offense on your signature and issued 1 point (10% warning level). On Tuesday at 3:30 PM, that point expires and you're back at a 0% warning level. However, if you violate the signature rules again, you're issued 2 points (20% warning level) and those points don't expire for 1 week. On your third and final signature offense, you're issued 2 points (20% warning level) and those points do not expire! You will continue to always have 2 points. That means if you break another rule and are issued 2 points, you'll lose the ability to post for 1 day. If/when those points expire, you'll be back to 2 points.
